The Student Council of the Arendtsville Elementary School held a paper flower fundraiser and raised $210 for the animals at the ACSPCA !!  Plus they also collected many toys, cat litter and office supplies.  We were thrilled that these students are interested in our SPCA and our mission. We deeply appreciate their generosity and care and concern for animals!!!

The Adams County Winery’s husband and wife team of John Kramb
and Katherine Bigler presented a $4,496.35 check to the ACSPCA!

Winery owner Katherine Bigler (right) and mascot Rusty (front) presented the $4,496.35 check to Joan Stemmel, Adams County SPCA Board President (left), and Abby Avery, Shelter Manager (center), during an SPCA Board Meeting on Sunday, January 27.

The donation, representing the winery’s cooperative fundraising efforts throughout 2012, marks the sixth consecutive year of support to the not-for-profit group on the part of the winery.

Last year’s lead fundraising event for the Shelter was the Third Annual Rusty’s Birthday Bash on June 30, held in celebration of the winery’s Golden Retriever VIP (very important pet). Hundreds of visiting dogs and their human companions enjoyed music, food, demonstrations, custom wine labels for pets and people, and a Rusty’s Sidekick photo contest. Lilly, a Labradoodle, was the winner of the contest as decided via onsite and online voting, and appeared on every label of Rusty’s Red wine sold by the winery during the month of August. The winery donated $1 to the Adams County SPCA for each bottle sold during the month, accounting for more than $1,200 of the total 2012 donation. Donations to the Adams County SPCA can be made year-round at the farm winery, 251 Peach Tree Road in Orrtanna, as well as at its Wine Shop at 25C in downtown Gettysburg. Rusty, adopted in 2008, remains a top attraction at the pet- and family-friendly winery. The 2013 Birthday Bash  is scheduled for Saturday, June 15.

Dear Adams County residents and supporters,

We are a small, non profit public animal shelter, located outside beautiful historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Our little shelter was built in 1978 and has housed thousands of animals over the last 35 years. In 2011 alone, we sheltered nearly 2500 animals, and with the economy continuing to downslide, we expect to take in more this year. Our staff of 12 dedicated employees, who work for a very low salary, clean and care for the abandoned, abused and neglected animals that come through our doors.
Several years ago we received a matching grant to build a much needed barn for housing large animals. Sometimes we wondered why we didn’t ask for funding to renovate the shelter, and then on November 16, 2011, we rescued 21 starving thoroughbred weanlings from a nearby farm in PA. That barn never looked so good! Even though we had only 7 stalls, we managed to house all of the baby horses for several days until foster homes were found to take several. The community has been very generous in supporting us with volunteers and donations of hay, feed, sawdust, and help with medical costs. We are so very grateful.
Our biggest problem facing us now is the condition of our shelter. Basically it’s rapidly deteriorating due to age and use. Every time we are inspected, the list of repairs and needed improvements continues to grow. Our Board of Directors has come to the conclusion that a new facility or significant renovation to our current building, is a necessity. We have in the past, and will again this year, apply for grants to pay for this project, although in our experience, funds for capital improvements are very limited. We will, of course, ask our local community to support us and will continue to organize fund raisers to cover both our ongoing operating expenses and the costs of a new building or renovation. Regrettably, these efforts will not be enough to achieve our goal so we are reaching out beyond our community in search of support.
Our mission is to raise awareness of this situation in hopes of obtaining financial assistance for our project.  You most likely receive dozens of requests like this each year, so we thank you for taking the time to read this and hope you will consider making a donation so that we can build a new shelter or renovate the current building for the benefit of homeless, abused and neglected animals. We can provide financial records, statistics of animal intake or any other information you may request. Please help the helpless, who have no voice and contribute to our building project.

Very truly yours,
Joan Stremmel

They have partnered with over 12 Local Churches, 2 Volunteer Fire Company's, The Hanover Council of Churches and the Adams County SPCA. Community Aid Inc helps support these non-profit organizations with the proceeds from their thrift store and clothing collection boxes. Community Aid donates $.04 per lb of clothing to the Adams County SPCA on any of their bins that have the SPCA logo.
